THE SCENE OF INSCRIPTION

FRAGMENTS 2024 DESIGN SERIES

FRAGMENTS are shaped to resemble dissected bones and body parts. Each fragmentary part alone, produces an empty sign of intensity. But when perceived side by side, they constitute a pattern attesting to displacement, replication and simulation strategies. Fragments series were intended for activation during the performative act, THE SCENE OF INSCRIPTION, presented at Dutch Design Week 2024.

Knucklebones were found in large counts in archeological sights from the Archaic - Roman period. They form an early evidence attesting to disarticulation and fragmentation procedures, signaling the efforts of the slaughterer to disconnect and distinguish tarsal bones of the animal and the attempt to separate the femur / tibia, the main edible part, from the metatarsal bones and phalanges. Knucklebones displaced from their original site of meaning, were later manipulated to perform new tasks across the mediterannean world. [Trantalidou, 2008]
