The Scene of Inscription
Design series, 2024
The series of objects are shaped to resemble the dissected bones referencing knucklebones. Knucklebones and their replicas, astragali, were found in large counts in archeological sights from the Archaic-Roman period. They exemplify the efforts of the slaughterer to disconnect and distinguish the tarsal bones of the animal and the attempt to separate the femur/tibia — the main edible part — from the metatarsal bones and phalanges. (Trantalidou on Ancient Greek Cult practices) Knucklebones displaced from their original site lost their meaning, but can serve as early evidence of disarticulation and fragmentation procedures, providing information on early exploitation strategies.
